Mississippi officer who fatally shot 1-year-old during shoplifting call resigns

Senatobia Mayor Greg Graves confirmed the resignation Friday, and the city's board of aldermen accepted it Oct. 21, according to The Commercial Appeal. Mississippi Attorney General Lynn Fitch's office announced earlier this week that the June 14 shooting in a Walmart parking lot was justified, and the state released body camera and surveillance video Thursday.

Foster's lawyer, Martin Zummach, has said Foster had "no choice" because the car was moving at him. Kohen's mother has disputed that account, the AP reported. Civil rights attorney Ben Crump, who represents the family, called on the Justice Department to investigate.

Why it matters: The resignation ends Foster's employment with the city, but the family's lawyers say they will keep seeking accountability, including a federal investigation.
